The Moyer House

Preserving Our Pioneer History

The Moyer House — Built in 1881

Step inside the Moyer House and experience one of Oregon’s finest examples of Italianate Villa architecture. Built in 1881 for prominent Brownsville residents John and Elizabeth Moyer, this 3,000-square-foot home was designed for elegance, artistry, and gracious entertaining.

A Home of Artistry and Social Life

Although the home features only two bedrooms, its layout reflects the Moyers’ active social life. Guests would have mingled in beautifully appointed spaces including:

  • Front Parlor

  • Ladies’ Parlor

  • Music Room

  • Dining Room

  • Large Kitchen

Every room showcases exceptional craftsmanship: intricately carved finials, hand-painted transoms, original murals above bay windows, and ceilings richly decorated with elaborate stenciling.

A Remarkable Restoration Effort

Thanks to the dedication of countless volunteers, the Moyer House has been meticulously restored to reflect its original 19th-century beauty. Restoration teams:

  • Removed layers of paint to uncover the home’s vibrant stenciled ceilings and crown moldings

  • Disassembled trim to locate original wallpaper fragments, which were faithfully reproduced and rehung

  • Pulled away muslin from ceilings to reveal hidden artwork and historic details

Today, the home stands as a rare and important example of Oregon’s architectural heritage—preserved for future generations.
